Jack Shedd on photos:
I don’t want to stare at some photo of me at 21 when I’m 50 and contemplate everything I was, or could have been. I don’t want to have to drown in partial truths, grasping at a falling memory to paint in details. I’d rather either remember, or not. Rather know, or forget. I’d rather be able to molt my life as it goes, letting the useless bits drop away as the important becomes more dear.
Jim Rossignol on apocalyptic scenarios:
A common interpretation of apocalypse in fiction is that it represents the author’s wishes to radically change or destroy himself: by obliterating everything that makes him what he is, perhaps, he is reincarnating himself, what he has become, or what was going to be. What does it mean, then, when the default view of the future for a large part of any given society is an apocalyptic one? Are we trying to find a way to express a need for change?
An enjoyable profile of Jake Godby, the man behind San Francisco ice-cream parlour Humphry Slocombe. I’ve tried their Boccalone Lard Caramels before, and I’d love to pay a visit to sample more of their stuff.
My favourite so far. I’m not sure that any of these are really hipsters, but they do seem a lot like the couples I see in Highgate so it resonates nonetheless.
Verbal Spew on New Super Mario Bros. Wii”
It really should be impossible to create a platformer that satisfies the lust for challenge endemic to fans of classic platformers yet which also allows a new player to ease in and feel comfortable, yet NMSB Wii does precisely that.
So far as I’m concerned, that doesn’t just make it a great game; it also makes it the embodiment of everything this entire console generation aspires to: Bridging the divide between dedicated gamers and those who take a more casual approach.
